This won’t be a “Black” Friday after all.
The Colorado sports betting market will get to watch and wager on Peyton “Freaking” Manning.
Unfortunately, it won’t be on the field when the Denver Broncos host the New Orleans Saints in Week 12. But, still, some Peyton is better than no Peyton; especially in this tough Broncos season.
Manning is set to play in the third iteration of The Match next Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.
The Match III
PFM will team up with two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry.
They will compete against Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley.
Manning and Mickelson are the only holdovers from The Match II in May. The team of Manning and Tiger Woods defeated Mickelson and Tom Brady.
In terms of the sports betting odds for the event, Manning and Curry are the favorites.
What: The Match III: Peyton Manning/Steph Curry versus Phil Mickelson/Charles Barkley
When: 1 p.m. MST, Nov. 27
Where: Stone Canyon Golf Club in Oro Valley, Ariz.
Playing for charity
Similar to the popular event in May, The Match III is for charity.
As Golf Digest points out:
“The event will uniquely contribute toward and highlight diversity, equality and inclusion through donations to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, while raising awareness and spotlighting opportunities for diversity and equality in sports. Mickelson, Manning, Barkley and Curry have all supported these initiatives throughout their careers, which led to the foursome teaming up for the event.”
In terms of the pairings, Mickelson drew the short stick.
If you don’t know, Barkley is a horrible golfer with an even worse swing.
Yes, Mickelson is the only pro golfer playing the event, and he’ll need all of his expertise and talent to carry Barkley.
As he quipped to Golf Digest:
“While we may need a handicap for Chuck, I’m looking forward to playing with Peyton and Stephen and to help raise money for another important cause. It’s also going to give fans and viewers an up-close look at Stone Canyon Golf Club, a place that I’m extremely proud of and excited to show how special it is.”
Live betting The Match III
The other reason this will be such a draw — live betting.
If you’re new to this form of sports betting, this is a whole new experience that adds to the entertainment.
Based on the revenue for the first five months of handle, look for the four-day event to be incredibly popular. Golf betting has been in the top 10 each month since sports betting launched in Colorado.
What is live betting?
Similar to betting on games before they happen, you have moneyline, point spreads, and proposition (prop) bets. The same is true with golf.
When it comes to live betting in Colorado, you bet as the round is happening. Unlike regular betting odds that don’t fluctuate, in-play odds come and go quickly. That means you have to act fast.
When it comes to an event like The Match III, this is about trends or if you just have a gut feeling on a specific hole and you want to test your luck. Or if Manning gets hot, for example, you can test that and place a live bet.
Here are some of the live-betting offerings you might see from the various sportsbooks for The Match III:
- Individual holes: Pick a golfer from a group to win, lose or tie a specific hole
- Individual score: Predict how a golfer will do on a specific hole (birdie, par, bogey, etc.)
For those who have never done live betting before, this is a wonderful opportunity to take it for a ride. It’s also without the stress of it being a major championship like The Masters.
Special guest announcer
To help make the event better, legendary golf announcer Gary McCord is coming out of retirement to provide his special brand of insight and flat-out-funny commentary.
When you have Barkley involved, it should be the perfect addition.
As he told the Arizona Republic:
“There’s a reason they hired me and it’s not to say, ‘It’s 165 yards and he’s got a 6 iron.’ I’m just going to follow along and try to keep throwing kerosene on the fire.”
Coupled with the access to the players and the humor we’re bound to get, it’s a great way to spend a few hours.
Given up-and-down Broncos season (again), fans here could use a little break.
Manning comes to the rescue once again.
Are we sure he can’t put on that orange jersey?
