Key CO sports betting figures
Compared to other states, Colorado does not offer up the same breadth of data other states offer. For example, it does not divulge how each operator is performing. Nor does the state revenue reports denote what bets were placed online and which were placed at a brick-and-mortar sportsbook.
Nonetheless, there are some big numbers they do provide. Here is a look at what each category measures:
Handle: The total number of dollars wagered in a given month.
Gross gaming revenue (GGR): This number is calculated by deducting the amount of dollars paid out in winning bets from handle.
Net sports betting proceeds (NSBP): Also known as taxable revenue or adjusted gross revenue (AGR), NSBP is the amount of revenue that the sportsbooks actually pay taxes on. This number represents GGR minus the amount paid in bonus as well as the .25% federal excise tax on handle.
bonus: This is just what it sounds like. The sportsbooks offer promotional bets like bonus bets or deposit bonuses. The sportsbooks can then deduct that amount of bonus, dollar for dollar, off of GGR to get the revenue they actually pay taxes on.
State tax: The tax rate on sports betting in Colorado is 10% of NSBP. That money will go to the state of Colorado’s water conservation plan.
