Those who want the Barstool mobile app in Colorado will have to wait a little bit longer.
Exactly how long remains unclear.
Both Barstool and Penn National Gaming are mum on when it will launch its app in the Colorado sports betting market.
However, the Colorado Division of Gaming told PlayColorado on Friday that the last it heard on when Barstool might launch was possibly the first quarter of 2021.
As of the end of March, all that is known is it is “coming soon.”
While the launch remains a mystery, there are a few things we do know.
For one, the Barstool and Penn retail sportsbook is live at the Ameristar Casino in Black Hawk. The sportsbook launched earlier this week. Barstool and Penn have a partnership with Ameristar to bring sports betting to the Centennial State.
We also know that the Colorado market is on the cusp of big things.
CO sports betting market within Top 5
The August sports betting handle is our first indication yet of what the 5-month-old market is capable of, especially with the return of major US sports.
In just the fourth month of sports betting in CO, the handle jumped 117% from July.
The total handle for August was $128.6 million, up from $59.2 million in July.
That already puts Colorado in competition with Indiana for the fourth-largest sports betting market in the country.
Now that Colorado fans are able to partake in Denver Broncos betting and NFL betting, the September handle should jump even higher.
The other way Colorado sports betting revenue totals will continue to climb is as more sportsbooks launch in the state.
That’s where Barstool could become a major player in this market.
If we look at how the Barstool and Penn launch has gone in Pennsylvania, it’s not far-fetched to see that happening in Colorado.
As PlayPennsylvania highlights:
“The early launch numbers provided by Penn last week were promising, with 30,000 iOS app downloads in PA, 12,000 first time depositors, and $11 million in bets over the app’s first four days in operation.”
The story adds that Barstool’s and Penn’s opening weekend numbers put Barstool Sportsbook in position to contend with DraftKings for second in PA sports handle, while FanDuel remains dominant.
That’s not to say it will play out exactly like this in Colorado. But with a brand and name as popular as Barstool, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
Those who want the Barstool app may have to wait a little bit longer. But the anticipation will help drive up interest for a sportsbook that could become a major player in Colorado.
