Full House and Smarkets have applied for all the necessary licenses. In fact, the pair could launch SBK under one of Full House Resorts’ Colorado master licenses for sports wagering as soon as May 1.
Full House Resorts is the owner and operator of Bronco Billy’s Casino and Hotel in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Its other master licenses for sports betting have been taken up by partnerships with luxury US casino operator Wynn Resorts and US horse racing and casino giant Churchill Downs and its emerging online gaming brand BetAmerica.

The state is now finalizing regulations to govern sports betting in Colorado and has given the first sportsbooks the green light to launch on May 1, 2020.

Smarkets would likely need larger states to get on board or interstate sports wagering agreements to launch first for a betting exchange to be successful.
Wrapping up: SBK in Colorado
Smarkets offers a unique gaming product the likes of which the US has never seen. Although it hopes to one day bring its betting exchange to the US, it’s launching first with a more traditional sportsbook mobile app in Colorado.
If SBK can succeed in bringing betting exchange-based pricing to a sportsbook, as it is attempting in the UK, it will be successful in the US. Price is king in the US, and savvy sports bettors shop for lines.
However, if SBK prices are the same as its competitors, it will likely be just another sportsbook app in what’s shaping up to be a rather saturated market.
The fact SBK is an app-only product won’t help either, as the competition is sure to be taking bets wherever it can get them.
Neither Smarkets nor SBK has the kind of brand recognition in the US that other sportsbook operators do, and if they can’t separate themselves in the very crowded Colorado sports betting market by offering discount prices, they’ll need to come up with another effective marketing strategy.
If they don’t, SBK might not make it to the day when the Smarkets betting exchange becomes viable in the US market.
