Record $7.61 billion in Super Bowl bets expected
An estimate was released Tuesday on the amount of wagering expected for Super Bowl LVI.
And while the numbers weren’t surprising, they still are staggering.
The American Gaming Association said in a news release that a record 31.4 million Americans are expected to bet on Sunday’s Big Game.
And those wagers, according to the AGA, are expected to total approximately $7.61 billion.
If so, that would be an estimated increase of $3.33 billion (44 percent) from last season.
The estimates come from a national survey conducted by the data firm Morning Consult on behalf of the AGA. The firm surveyed 2,212 adults in early February.
The projected amount wagered and the number of bettors easily are high-water marks since the AGA began commissioning the annual survey in 2015.
The record numbers will be the result of several factors, according to the AGA.
Topping the list is the increased availability of live, legal betting markets.
Currently, 30 states and Washington D.C. boast those markets. That’s 10 more states than February of 2021, meaning 45 million more American adults have access to legal wagering in their home states.
The survey also indicated that 76 percent of respondents said it was important to bet through a legal sportsbook — up 11 percent from 2021.
